The Amherst County Service Authority has decided not to resume fluoridation of its water supply for the time being. According to the New Era Progress, the controlled practice of adding small amounts of fluoride to the water supply as a method for reducing tooth decay was discontinued at the water filtration plant in Madison Heights in March 2011; after the feed system was moved to a different part of the plant during upgrades. The Public Utilities Director approached the service authority board last month regarding the issue after receiving a letter in October from the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Drinking Water that encouraged the resumption of fluoridation. During that meeting, the board sided with opposing views and voted not to resume fluoridation at the plant at this time.
