A wintry mix of sleet, rain and freezing rain began to fall across the region around 2am this morning. The Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation in Lynchburg is responsible for approximately 15, 000 miles of roadways throughout ten counties including Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell, Nelson and Pittsylvania. Crews will focus on primary routes like 501, 460 and 29, along with secondary routes like Timberlake and Leesville Roads on an as need basis. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice is possible– mainly on trees and power lines— but total accumulation will vary from one location to the next. VDOT reminds drivers to keep a safe distance behind other vehicles and be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots, bridges and overpasses. Frozen precip is expected to be concluded by late morning. Though, the National Weather Service has forecast more rain and potential snow tomorrow morning.
